ANYWAY YOU RUN TO

From ALL DRESSED UP
Written by David Roberts

In 1982, Canadian singer/songwriter David Roberts released his debut album entitled All Dressed Up. Produced by supreme music-maker Greg Mathieson, All Dressed Up was one of those obscure pop recordings that presented such a superior musical quality that deserved far better luck on the charts and radio. The noteworthy level of Roberts’ compositions and top-notch value of the production was on the same wavelength, in terms of catchiness and craft, of platinum sellers like Christopher Cross and Toto IV. Every time All Dressed Up graces our ears, we can’t help but wonder why it didn’t take the American charts by storm. Roberts’ endeavor included the pop/rock gems “Too Good To Last” and “Someone Like You” that had perfect melodic appeal and fantastic musicianship courtesy of Toto guys including the late Jeff and Mike Porcaro on drums and bass, Steve Lukather on guitar and producer Mathieson on various keyboards. Roberts gave solid and effective vocals throughout the album, especially on the two gorgeous love ballads “Midnight Rendez-Vous” and “Another World.”

All these solid tunes featured irresistible melodies and beautifully conceived instrumental arrangements. Other highlights were the jazzy, refined “Wrong Side Of The Tracks” with its terrific time changes and soulful mood plus the acoustic, Christopher Cross-inspired “Boys Of Autumn.” The feel-good pop atmosphere of “Anywhere You Run To” featured David Foster on synthesizers and executive producer Jay Graydon on guitars. The golden touch of the former Airplay duo enhanced the radio-friendly power of the song that was one of the singles from All Dressed Up. This song’s potential didn’t go unnoticed. Diana Ross covered it with excellent results on her Silk Electric album. Two other songs from Roberts’ album received notable covers, one by Nielsen/Pearson who reinterpreted “Too Good To Last” on their Blind Luck recording and jazz greats Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson who brought the gorgeous “Midnight Rendez-Vous” to their soul/jazz territory on their album, “The Two Of Us.” All Dressed Up was one of the most treasured ‘unknown’ works for lovers of the so-called West Coast Pop Movement. This album included some of the most refined LA pop/rock of the eighties. We strongly suggest you check it out.
After the commercial disappointment of All Dressed Up, Roberts built a good career as an AOR songwriter for big names like Starship, John Waite and Bad English. In 2008, the singer released his sophomore cd aptly titled Better Late Than Never.

Lyrics

Who will be the one you run to
Whenever it’s dark and cold outside?
And where will you go
When you need a place to hide?

Baby, did you know that I’d loved you still?
But I won’t relax
Until you’re back in my arms
Can’t you see that my love is real?

Darling, anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
And you know I’ll find you
Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
‘Cause I must remind you

I would sail a boat across the sea
I would fly a plane to wherever you may be
Think you should know
That my love can only grow

But if it’s the last thing that I’ll ever do
I swear that I’ll make it back to you
Before you leave
There’s one thing that you must believe

Darling, anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
And you know I’ll find you
Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
‘Cause I must remind you

I would sail a boat across the sea
I would fly a plane to wherever you may be
Think you should know
That my love can only grow

But if it’s the last thing that I’ll ever do
I swear that I’ll make it back to you
Before you leave
There’s one thing that you must believe

Darling, anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
And you know I’ll find you
Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
‘Cause I must remind you

Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
And you know I’ll find you
Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
‘Cause I must remind you

Anywhere you run to
I will be right behind you
And you know I’ll find you
