BABY COME TO ME

from EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE
Written by Rod Temperton

At the beginning of the eighties, the great Quincy Jones produced a string of soul/pop gems including the late Michael Jackson’s (1958-2009) mega-sellerThriller, George Benson’s Give Me The Night, the late Donna Summer’s (1948-2012) self-titled album, his own solo, The Dude, plus Patti Austin’s Every Home Should Have One. All those records became hits for the legendary music producer and his dream team of songwriters, arrangers and musicians that included the Toto guys, the late Rod Temperton (1949-2016), Jerry Hey and David Foster.

Foster had been a fixture on Q’s productions since 1978 when the future Hitman played, co-wrote and arranged music on The Brother Johnson’s Blam album. From all that impressive body of work, the spotlight hit upon Ms. Austin’s 1982 hit ballad, “Baby, Come To Me.”
This beautiful song was the brainchild of Temperton’s like the bulk of Every Home Should Have One. A former member of the UK R&B combo Heatwave, this self-made genius met with Jones and, together, they where a match made in heaven. With tons of glorious hits, “Baby, Come To Me” became a #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in February 1983 after this love ballad was heavily featured on the soap opera, General Hospital. “Baby Come To Me” was a stunning duet with another of Jones’ protégées, James Ingram. Austin’s and Ingram’s vocal performances were a textbook in finesse, class and style. The refined backing track was crafted by Temperton and included top session ace John Robinson on drums, Steve Lukather on guitar, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards, Foster on synths with Temperton and Mike Boddicker. With a showcase of superior musical talent, this classic Q production was a top-notch affair that established this love song as a much-adored evergreen.

Lyrics

Thinkin’ back in time
When love was only in the mind
I realize
Ain’t no second chance
You got to hold on to romance
Don’t let it slide

There’s a special kind of magic in the air
When you find another heart that needs to share

Baby, come to me
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
And I’m oh-so glad I found you
Need you everyday
Got to have your love around me
Baby, always stay
‘Cause I can’t go back to living without you

Spendin’ every dime
To keep you talkin’ on the line
That’s how it was

And all those walks together
Out in any kind of weather
Just because

There’s a brand new way of looking at your life
When you know that love is standing by your side

Baby, come to me
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
And I’m oh-so glad I found you
Need you everyday
Got to have your love around me
Baby, always stay
‘Cause I can’t go back to living without you

The night can be cold
There’s a chill to every evening when you’re all alone
Don’t talk anymore
‘Cause you know that I’ll be here to keep you warm

Baby, come to me
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
And I’m oh-so glad I found you
Need you everyday
Got to have your love around me
Baby, always stay

Come to me
This was meant to be
Need you everyday
Baby, always stay
I can’t go back to living without you
Without you
Without you
