LEARNING TO LOVE AGAIN

In 1979, traditional pop star Paul Anka released his new album titled Headlines. It was the Canadian icon’s second album for RCA Victor after Listen To Your Heart the previous year. Torn between the disco craze and the new punk/rock sounds, the record company didn’t push the album properly. To his credit, the veteran singer/songwriter tried to modernize his trademark conservative pop music with a couple of disco-influenced numbers and a collaboration with an up-’n’-coming music-maker named David Foster. Foster had appeared on a couple of Mr. Anka’s past releases playing keyboards and co-writing songs.

I CAN’T TELL YOU WHY

“I Can’t Tell You Why” was a signature ballad of the legendary Eagles’. This soft-rock staple was conceived by the group’s singer/bassist Timothy B. Schmit and completed in collaboration with the Eagles’ main men, singer/drummer Don Henley and singer/guitarist Glenn Frey (1948 to 2016). Beautifully sung by Schmit on his first lead vocal for the group, “I Can’t Tell You Why” was released as the third single off the band’s 1979 The Long Run album. The song sported a blue-eyed soul feel with its gorgeous verses, memorable refrain, immaculate vocal and instrumental performances, reached #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Since 1985, The CompanY has been one of Asia’s premiere vocal groups. They have released a string of interesting records showcasing their remarkable vocal harmonies strongly influenced by music giants including Manhattan Transfer, Take 6 and The Fifth Dimension.

In 2008 The CompanY, Sweet Plantado, Annie Quintos, Cecile Bautista, Jay Marquez and Moy Ortiz released their new cd entitled Group Hug. That album was a tribute to some of their favorite musical acts delivered with the support of renowned arranger/conductor Gerard Salonga, the younger brother of Filipino singer/actress star Lea Salonga, and his impressive, Manila-based symphony orchestra called FILharmoniKa.

SEPTEMBER

The monster 1978 hit “September” was probably the most successful song ever released by legendary soul/R&B band, Earth, Wind & Fire. This breezy, feel-good anthem was co-written by the band’s leader, the late, great Maurice White (1941 to 2016), with EWF’s former guitar player, Al McKay. The positive lyrics were conceived by Mr. White together with renowned tunesmith, Allee Willis. The song was recorded during the sessions for the I Am album around September, 1978. Starting from McKay’s flamboyant intro, the song developed into one of the catchiest and most memorable funk/soul numbers ever. An important, but little-known, fact for David Foster fans was that The Hitman, who was a key figure on those 1978 sessions, played keyboards on “September” just like he did on most of the I Am tracks.

IF I DIDN’T LOVE YOU

A Love Like Ours was Barbra Streisand’s 28th studio album. It saw the light of day on September 21st, 1999. The string of effective love ballads included on that project celebrated her recent marriage with veteran TV and movie actor James Brolin. A Love Like Ours was the classic triumph of traditional pop with a bulk of perfectly-dosed tender love songs that, from time to time, ventured into light jazz, Latin-tinged pop and radio-friendly, adult contemporary stuff. David Foster was one of several heavyweight music-makers on board and produced two tracks.
