Every time Renee Olstead’s outstanding rendition of George Gershwin’s (1898-1937) immortal classic “Summertime” was heard, listen in amazement because the young singer/actress was only fifteen years old at the time she performed the standard. This song was the first released from her 2004 self-titled cd. Olstead’s performance captures her control, technique and a class delivered with disarming ease.

Gwen Owens was an R&B singer better known as a member of the pop/soul vocal trio Hot that gained some popularity in the second half of the seventies. The late, Cathy Carson (1953-2014) and Juanita Curiel were the other voices of the group. Together, Hot scored a Top Ten hit and million-selling single with the 1977 “Angel In Your Arms.” Hot released three albums between 1977 and 1980 that were produced by Clayton Ivey and Terry Woodford, two key figures of the Muscle Shoals studio scene. Those albums showcased various music styles from pop and soul to disco and country.

Attitudes was the supergroup that a young but already super-talented David Foster formed in the mid-seventies with revered drummer, Jim Keltner, top notch guitarist, Danny Kortchmar and skilled bassist and vocalist, Paul Stallworth.

The late, great Maurice White (1941-2016) and David Foster with lyricist Allee Willis co-wrote Jennifer Holliday’s 1983 hit, “I Am Love.” That gorgeous ballad was the first single off Ms. Holliday’s debut Feel My Soul album which was produced by the Earth, Wind & Fire maestro. “I Am Love” reached #2 on the R&B charts and crossed over to #49 on Billboard’s Hot 100. That wondrous ballad was a past Song of the Week and its review can still be read in the archives.

Gladys Knight is a treasure and legend of soul music as a solo performer and as the main attraction of Gladys Knight & The Pips. This amazing singer left a unique print on the history of black music. Ms. Knight is a seven-time Grammy winner and, together with The Pips, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Among the many Gladys Knight & The Pips signature hits are “Every Bit Of My Heart,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “If I Were Your Woman,” “Midnight Train To Georgia,” “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” and “Landlord.”
