from ENJOY THE SILENCE (single)
written by Martin Lee Gore
The forthcoming cd by Italian/French singer/songwriter and former supermodel Carla Bruni is the final project that David Foster produced during his tenure as head of Verve Records. Ms. Bruni is the wife of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The cd was recorded last year between Paris and Los Angeles. Ms. Bruni and Foster carefully picked a number of covers that will be the core of their collaboration. French Touch, as the cd is called, is scheduled for release on Friday, Oct. 6. This new collection was anticipated in May by the release of its first single, “Enjoy The Silence.”
Originally a 1990 worldwide hit by revered English electronic rock band Depeche Mode, “Enjoy The Silence” was totally reworked by Foster for Ms. Bruni. He drastically changed the atmosphere from its new-wave/electronic sound to a delicate, acoustic tone. The collaboration between Foster and Ms. Bruni must have been different and stimulating for The Hitman. She was obviously not the kind of singer that Foster usually works with. Foster’s known for his great ability in the studio to get top-notch performances from the world’s most treasured voices like Andrea Bocelli or Celine Dion. On “Enjoy The Silence” and the forthcoming French Touch, he and co-producer Jochem van der Saag went for a vibe of subtle emotion instead of those trademark golden notes. Conceptually, as van der Saag recently told us, “it was like having Ms. Bruni sitting on a couch singing in our ear with her smoky voice and the stereo playing in the back.” The supporting track was a joy; superior instrumental performances and a glorious string arrangement by Foster and the great Chris Walden.
Foster first recorded Ms. Bruni’s vocals with talented French musicians in Paris . The US performances were captured later on at the famed Capitol Studios in L.A. and consisted of session greats including Dean Parks on guitar, Jim Keltner on drums and Rafel Padilla on percussion. For sure, the refined mood of “Enjoy The Silence” wetted appetites for the whole French Touch cd that will present many more auditory pleasures. This project will be the only Foster production to see the light of day in 2017.

Lyrics
Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can’t you understand?
Oh, my little one
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
