FOR YOU FOR LOVE

From PICKIN’ UP THE PIECES: THE BEST OF AVERAGE WHITE BAND (1974-1980)
Written by Bill Champlin & Roger Ball

The Average White Band is, without a doubt, one of the best R&B/soul groups ever. These talented Scottish funksters have delighted the ears and souls of legions of fans during the course of their long career. The years between 1974 and 1980 saw the first incarnation of the band releasing a string of amazing hit records. Their main influence was the great soul/funk American tradition of masters like Marvin Gaye, yet they also incorporated sophisticated pop textures of people like Burt Bacharach. Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart were the lead singers and main writers of the band, two musical forces that, under the expert guidance of the late super-producer Arif Mardin, brought the band to superstardom.

“Pickin’ Up The Pieces: The Best Of Average White Band (1974-1980)” is a detailed collection that presents their most loved hits. There are funk classics like “Cut The Cake,” “Pick Up The Pieces” and “When Will You Be Mine,” smooth jams like “A Love Of Your Own” and “Cloudy” plus goodies like Leon Ware’s “If I Ever Lose This Heaven” and the Latin-tinged “Queen Of My Soul.” Two tunes on this collection, “Let’s Go ‘Round Again” and “For You, For Love,” come from 1980’s “Shine,” an album that marked Average White Band’s collaboration with David Foster. Foster’s quality pop and hi-tech production mellowed the band’s funk a bit while increasing the sophistication of their sound. “Let’s Go ‘Round Again” was a big hit and remains one of their most-loved songs to this day. “For You, For Love” is a trademark classy ballad co-written by Bill Champlin with Average White Band’s sax and keyboards man, Roger Ball. This song belongs to the same rich musical field that brought to life the absolute masterpiece “After The Love Is Gone.” “For You, For Love” caresses the listener with a gorgeous melody, superior vocal interplay between Gorrie and Stuart beautifully supported by Foster’s impeccable arrangement. “Pickin’ Up The Pieces: The Best Of Average White Band (1974-1980)” is rich in those kind of moments and definitive proof that these six white guys were second to none when it was time to make it groove.

Lyrics

Love, has finally come my way
You fill my everyday with love, Ithink I’ll stay around
Your sweet love, has brought new life to me
A pair of eyes to see, so I don’t have to dream about
Loving you is changing everything
I’ve got this song to sing,
For You, For Love
Oh girl, thank you for the time, we’re spending
For the love, for the love that you give
Oh girl, thank you for my life
I thank you everytime I think of you and I
Now I live for love
When loneliness is gone, and happiness is found
With love I think I’ll stay around
Your sweet love, has taught me something new
Has brought me home to you
So I don’t have to dream about
Loving you, is changing everything
I’ve got this song to sing,For You, For Love
Oh girl, thank your smile, for the time we’re spending
For the love, for the love that you give
Oh girl, thank you for my life
I thank you everytime I think of you and I
Live for, live for, live for love
Loving you is changing everything
I’ve got this song to sing For You, For Love
Oh girl, thank you for the life
I thank you everytime I think of you and I
And now live for love
Oh girl, thank your smile, thank you
for the time, we’re spending
For the love, for the love that you give
Oh girl, thank you for my life
I thank you everytime I think of you and I
Now I live for love
