WHY SHOULD I CARE

From WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES
Written by Carole Bayer Sager, Linda Thompson & Clint Eastwood

What a gorgeous song this is. David Foster and Tommy Lipuma worked their magic again on this modern torch song exactly like they did a few years back for the Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable” project. It is always a pleasure to see Foster and Lipuma working together, they are two of the most talented producers ever, especially in that borderline where jazz, pop and soul mix together creating a unique and refined sound.

“Why Should I Care” was included on the soundtrack for the movie “True Crime” and also as a bonus track on Krall’s “When I Look In Your Eyes”. It was written by Carole Bayer Sager and Linda Thompson with Clint Eastwood (the star and director of the movie) who shows great skills as a composer too. The wonderful voice of Diana Krall takes your hand and leads you into the song’s bittersweet mood with the strings (probably arranged by Johnny Mandel) and a warm saxophone helping her setting the atmosphere.

Foster and Krall worked together on a few other occasions, first when she played piano for Celine Dion’s cover of “Blue Christmas” and, in particular, when Foster and his daughter Amy wrote for her another beautiful composition entitled “I’ll Make It Up As I Go” that was on the soundtrack of the movie “The Score”.

Lyrics

Was there something more I could have done?
Or was I not meant to be the one?
Where’s the life I thought we would share?
And should I care?

And will someone else get more of you?
Will she go to sleep more sure of you?
Will she wake up knowing you’re still there?
And why should I care?

There’s always one to turn and walk away
And one who just wants to stay
But who said that love is always fair?
And why should I care?

Should I leave you alone here in the dark?
Holding my broken heart
While a promise still hangs in the air
Why should I care?
