WISH YOU WERE HERE TONIGHT

Released in the summer of 1983, “Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)” was Sheena Easton’s first single from her fourth album release, Best Kept Secret. This danceable pop ditty was co-written by Greg Mathieson and Trevor Veitch with a little twist (telefone instead of telephone). Mathieson also produced “Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)” which reached #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #15 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Easton was red-hot from the success of “We’ve Got Tonight,” her #1 duet with the formidable Kenny Rogers (1938-2020) that David Foster had produced earlier that year. It seems like the young songbird hoped to work again with the Hitman on Best Kept Secret, but Foster’s busy schedule didn’t allow it.

STEPPIN’ TO THE BAD SIDE

Dreamgirls was one of the top musicals on Broadway in the eighties. Its memorable music was composed by Henry Krieger while the lyrics and book were written by the late Tom Eyen (1940-1991). The show debuted in December 1981 and went on to become a smash hit. Dreamgirls gained thirteen Tony Awards nominations with six wins. Dreamgirls was also the springboard for Jennifer Holliday’s career. Holliday’s performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” became the musical’s show-stopper and a much-loved evergreen.

Over the course of their long and successful careers, David Foster and legendary guitarist Lee Ritenour crossed paths many times starting with the magical L.A. session years of the seventies where they would often show up on the same dates to the guitarist’s 1981 RIT album that Foster co-produced and which became a best-seller. The Hitman and Ritenour even co-headlined a Japanese tour in 1987 and often appeared on each other’s solo efforts including Foster’s The Symphony Sessions.

MAN ENOUGH TO CRY

Eric Benet’s 2005 Hurricane cd was a very personal and interesting project. Hurricane  saw the R&B singer/songwriter moving away from the contemporary neo-soul sounds of his previous works in favor of a sophisticated musical landscape influenced by icons of the ’70s like Kenny Loggins, Bill Withers and Christopher Cross. On Hurricane, Benet delivered bittersweet love themes with deep, introspective lyrics, especially on the five tracks helmed by David Foster and Humberto Gatica. One of these tunes was “Man Enough To Cry.”
