WE’VE GOT TONIGHT

from HITMAN RETURNS

Written by Bob Seger

Martina McBride is a famous country/pop singer/songwriter who was one of the leading ladies of the genre, alongside Faith Hill and Shania Twain, from the early nineties up to and including the new millennium. All of Ms. McBride’s albums from 1993 to 2007 were certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum. She also reached the Top Ten of the Country charts with twenty singles, including five #1s with “Wild Angels,” “A Broken Wing,” “Wrong Again,” “I Love You” and “Blessed.” Ms. McBride co-produced most of these hit singles.

In 2011, Ms. McBride was among the superstars enlisted by David Foster to join him for his second PBS television special titled Hitman Returns. On Foster’s show, Ms. McBride sung a beautiful rendition of the Charlie Chaplin song, “Smile.” Foster had previously produced “Smile” for Michael Jackson (1958-2009), a.k.a. the King of Pop. For the show, Ms. McBride also lent her superior talent to cover “We’ve Got Tonight,” the Bob Seger classic that Foster produced in 1981 as a duet for the incredible Kenny Rogers (1938-2020) and shining star Sheena Easton. Rogers’ and Easton’s cover of “We’ve Got Tonight” was a reminder of the unique power of classic Foster ballads of the Eighties. As always, Ms. McBride’s performance was flawless. She was accompanied by Foster on piano with his all-star band.

To close the review, the Hitman kindly sent a few words about Ms. McBride’s rendition of “We’ve Got Tonight”:
“I really loved doing the Kenny Rogers/Sheena Easton ‘We’ve Got Tonight’ duet. Kenny really  understood how a duet should be made and I learned that lesson from him. On my TV special, Hitman Returns, Martina McBride puther own spin on that classic song which was great cause, as widely known, the great Bob Seger’s original version was a solo one. To this day, I still consider Bob’s version the best of all, but our rendition with Kenny and Sheena went to number one on the country charts and that was a great achievement for all of us involved and the first number one for me on that chart.”

Lyrics

I know it’s late
I know you’re weary
And I know your plans don’t include me
Still, here we are, both of us lonely
Longing for shelter from all that we see
Why should we worry? No one will care girl
Look at the stars now, so far away

We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow?
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t you stay?

Deep in my soul
I’ve been so lonely
All of my hopes fading away
I’ve longed for love
Like everyone else does
I know I’ll keep searching after today

So there it is girl
We’ve got it all now
And here we are, babe
What do you say?

We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow?
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t we stay?
I know it’s late and I know you’re weary
I know your plans don’t include me (still here we are)
Both of us lonely
Both of us lonely

We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow?
Let’s make it last
Let’s find a way
Turn out the light
Come take my hand now
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t we stay?

We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t we stay?
