Neil Sedaka is a legend of American popular music. From his start in the fifties as a songwriter in the famed Brill Building in New York to his big hits of the sixties and the seventies, Sedaka has been a fixture of the international pop scene for nearly sixty years. Sedaka and Foster have been close friends since the seventies when the world-famous music producer played keyboards on classic albums like The Hungry Years and Overnight Success. Foster even produced some interesting material for the singer’s eldest daughter Dara including her beautiful 1982 album I’m Your Girlfriend. Foster also appeared as the musical director for Sedaka’s 2007 special concert for his 50th anniversary in show business.

“You’re The Inspiration” was one of those classic songs that is a cornerstone in David Foster’s long and successful career. Co-written by The Hitman with Peter Cetera, this power ballad was released in October 1984 as the third single from the multiplatinum Chicago 17. “You’re The Inspiration” was the perfect follow-up to another masterpiece ballad, “Hard Habit To Break.” Like its predecessor, “You’re The Inspiration” jumped to #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and also reached the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. Listening to this magical ballad, it was easy to say all the names involved were at the top of their game. Cetera and Foster were on a collaborative roll and they co-wrote the musical structure of the song in just a few hours. The two music legends could do no wrong.

In 1992, famous R&B songstress Miki Howard portrayed the legendary Billie Holiday in Spike Lee’s movie Malcolm X. She performed the late jazz singer’s classic “I Cover The Waterfront” and covered Holliday’s “Good Morning Heartache” on her Femme Fatale cd. Apparently, her performances didn’t go unnoticed. A year later she went into the studio and recorded an entire cd of Holliday’s trademark tunes. The recordings were supervised by the renown team of David Foster and LeMel Humes and Miki Sings Billie was released on December 1993.

Fairly often, we feel the need to rediscover the amazing vocal prowess of the late Warren Wiebe. Wiebe was an outstanding talent who, in the early nineties, became David Foster’s “voice” in the studio and for countless live events. This magnificent singer was also a troubled soul who sadly left us in 1998 at the young age of 45.

The autumn of 1976 witnessed the release of the Cate Brothers’ sophomore album In One Eye And Out The Other. After the solid success of their 1975 self-titled debut album, Ernie and Earl Cate decided to keep the winning team of Cate Brothers with legendary guitarist Steve Cropper sitting in the producer chair. Cropper again enlisted some high-profile session guys including Cropper’s partner in Booker T. and The MG’s Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass, drummers Ed Green and Mike Baird, sax virtuoso Jim Horn and David Foster on a variety of keyboards.
