I DON’T KNOW HOW I GOT BY

 from THE FAMILY MAN OST

written by Diane Warren

Edwin McCain is an American pop/rock singer/songwriter and guitar player. Around the end of the nineties, McCain, scored two solid Top 40/Adult Contemporary hit singles with “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More.” Both songs were produced by Matt Serletic and were intense power ballads with rock overtones. “I’ll Be” was written by the singer while “I Could Not Ask For More” was delivered by supreme tunesmith Diane Warren. “I Could Not Ask For More” was also included on the soundtrack of the 1999 Kevin Costner movie, “Message In A Bottle.”

That soundtrack was released on 143 Records, David Foster’s old label. The Canadian music-maker played a big role in picking songs for that project and produced the bulk of the album.

The success of “I Could Not Ask For More” asked for a follow-up, so, one year later, Diane Warren came up with another killer ballad titled “I Don’t Know How I Got By.” This time around, Foster took the production himself and the result was a knock-out love song. “I Don’t Know How I Got By” sports a memorable melody and superb refrain with a rocking, guitar-driven atmosphere. McCain perfectly nailed his vocals under Foster’s expert touch. This rock ballad also presents a gorgeous orchestral background that adds even more emotional power to the tune. “I Don’t Know How I Got By” was included on the soundtrack of another high-profile movie, Nicholas Cage’s“The Family Man.” The song was also part of “The Best Of Edwin McCain,” released in 2010 and featuring the singer/songwriter’s most loved hits and album tracks.Like the vast majority of Diane Warren’s songs, “I Don’t Know How I Got By” also had its share of covers by country star Travis Tritt,UKtenor Russell Watson and pop singer Jake Simpson.

Lyrics

How did I wake up each day
Before that moment I saw your face
Where was I before your touch
No where is where I was, without you
Without you in it
My life was just a lie
Before you I don’t know how I got by

Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don’t know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn’t really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don’t know how I got by

How did I get through those nights
Before that moment I held you tight
And where was I before your kiss
And how did I exist without you
Life had no meaning
No reason and no rhyme
And before you I don’t know how I got by

Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don’t know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn’t really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don’t know how I got by

I thank God when I wake each day
Awaking next to you
Don’t know what I was living for
Before you, before you ohhhhh

Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don’t know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn’t really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don’t know how I got by

Before I met you
I don’t know how I got by
