POISON IVY

from ROCKAPELLA

written by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller

The Nylons are a Canadian vocal quartet who performs most of their material acappella with an accompaniment of minimal percussions. Through some line-up changes, The Nylons have recorded several albums and performed live worldwide from 1978 to this day. The core of the group’s repertoire is interesting covers of pop classics like “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Happy Together” and “Kiss Him Goodbye.” These last two titles became good pop/adult contemporary hits in 1987 for the group.

In 1989, David Foster was working on the soundtrack of the movie “Stealing Home” starring Jodie Foster and Mark Harmon. That soundtrack included Foster’s gorgeous instrumental themes as well as some vintage tunes by Jerry Lee Lewis, The Shirelles, The Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley. To round out the compilation, Foster enlisted The Nylons to record a cool version of The Coasters’ “Poison Ivy” written by the legendary Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The song is performed acappella with a back up of Foster’s programmed drums. “Poison Ivy” showcases The Nylons’ truly impressive vocal harmonies under Foster’s expert guidance. This song was also included in the group’s 1989 album “Rockapella.” Around that same time, Paul Cooper, a baritone singer and The Nylons’ main songwriter, also composed material with Foster for Japanese singing star Seiko Matsuda.

Lyrics

She comes on like a rose but everybody knows
She’ll get you in Dutch
Now you can look but you better not touch
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you’re sleepin’ poison ivy comes a’creepin’
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
She’s pretty as a daisy but look out man she’s crazy
She’ll really do you in
Now if you let her under your skin
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you’re sleepin’ poison ivy comes a’creepin’
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Measles make you bumpy
And mumps’ll make you lumpy
And chicken pox’ll make you jump and twitch
A common cold’ll fool ya
And whooping cough’ll cool ya
But poison ivy, Lord’ll make you itch!!
You’re gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion
You’ll be scratchin’ like a hound
The minute you start to mess around
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you’re sleepin’ poison ivy comes a’creepin’
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Measles make you bumpy
And mumps’ll make you lumpy
And chicken pox’ll make you jump and twitch
A common cold’ll fool ya
And whooping cough’ll cool ya
But poison ivy, Lord’ll make you itch!!
You’re gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion
You’ll be scratchin’ like a hound
The minute you start to mess around
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you’re sleepin’ poison ivy comes a’creepin’
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
