YOU RAISE ME UP

from YOU RAISE ME UP (Radio Edit)

written by Rolf Lovland & Brendan Graham

“You Raise Me Up” is an inspirational song originally composed and performed in 2002 by Irish/Norvegian duo, Secret Garden. The song was brought to worldwide recognition by Josh Groban who recorded it, in 2003, for his second album, Closer. “You Raise Me Up” was the hit single off that album reaching the top of the adult contemporary chart where it stayed for six weeks. It was also Groban’s first entry on Billboard’s Hot 100 at #73 and it was eventually nominated for a Grammy as “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.”

“You Raise Me Up” quickly became Groban’s signature song with its powerful vocal and instrumental impact. David Foster who produced and arranged the track did a wonderful work with a spectacular crescendo of its memorable refrain that leads to the song’s emotional climax enhanced by a fantastic gospel choir. Groban is at the top of his game giving evidence of his superior talent caressing listeners as he sings the meaningful and positive lyrics.
Recently, at our request, the Hitman has kindly written a note with his memories about “You Raise Me Up.”
Here it is: “the actress Roma Downey told me about the song and her then boyfriend, actor Michael Nouri, brought it over to me. Coincidentally, Frank Petrone from my publishing company “Peermusic,” brought me the same song the next day. I told him that I was going to record the song that night cause I loved it so much. He watched it all unfold in one night (not the vocal but the basic track). It was exactly how a publishing company is supposed to work although I have to give the initial credit to Roma. It was all recorded in about two days at my studio in Malibu except for the strings. Also the folks at Warner Music Group decided that the choir was not hip, so they made me keep the choir really soft on the single version while on the album version it is much louder. There you have it, I heard it, loved it, recorded it and it became a hit. Jeff Ayeroff from Warner picked it off the album to be the first single.”

Lyrics

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up… To more than I can be.
