Kenny Loggins often referred to his 1985 release, “Vox Humana” as his r&b album. Though that statement might be not completely true, it is pretty evident that black music influenced a good portion of it and also the stylistic approach of many of Loggins’ vocal performances
Three refined cuts are totally in the r&b territory and these are the up-tempo ditty, “I’ll Be There,” co-written with David Foster, the soulful ballad, “Love Will Follow,” co-penned with Tom Snow” and another collaboration with Foster, the classy jam, “At Last.”
This last song is the usual ear candy and showcases fantastic vocal harmonies that match Loggins’ distinctive tenor with the voices of EWF’s Philip Bailey and the late, great Carl Anderson. “At Last” was also co-written by session ace, Nathan East whose bass playing gives the track a solid foundation with tons of keyboards to embellish the final result.
“Vox Humana” has also its share of classic Loggins like the title track that echoes the singer’s big hit, “Footloose” and one of his trademark ballads, “Forever,” that’s another Foster/Loggins classic.
“Vox Humana” was certified gold and spawned a couple of top 40 singles but it was considered a little commercial disappointment for the singer compared to his previous hit albums.
