After his massive success in the nineties with The Bodyguard soundtrack and chart toppers he produced for the likes of Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Madonna and Natalie Cole, David Foster became the most requested music-maker for big stars who were looking for a sure hit on the pop/adult contemporary charts.
Among the names Foster produced back in those days was a rock act that you wouldn’t normally associate with him – the German heavy metal band Scorpions. One of the most popular hard rock bands in the world, Scorpions released their 1996 album, “Pure Instinct,” co-produced by the famous Keith Olsen with sound engineer Erwin Musper. It was another original collection of powerful rock anthems mixed with a few rock ballads. All the material included was co-written by guitarist Rudolf Schenker and lead singer Klaus Meine. The album wasn’t a hit in the US though one of its rockers, “Wild Child,” reached the top 20 on the mainstream rock chart.
Scorpions asked for Foster’s collaboration to arrange and produce a new version of one of the best ballads on the album entitled “When You Came Into My Life.” Reinventing the song, Foster gave it an adult contemporary twist with piano and keyboards supporting Meine’s powerful tenor voice. Foster’s work was extremely catchy yet respectful of the band’s sonic impact. This remix became a single for the Japanese market backed by another guitar-driven rock ballad, “Kiss Of Borrowed Time.”
