In the second half of the nineties, David Foster kept his string of hits going with a series of collaborations among many big, young urban stars like Brandy, ‘N Sync, Jon B, Dru Hill, Faith Evans and Monica. Foster’s smooth and perfectly crafted productions were usually included on the albums to give a classic, refined twist to the mood of these modern soul records and attract an adult audience. One of the best examples is Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine.” This platinum seller includes nu-soul tracks supervised by hip-hop stars like Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri and Rodney Jerkins as well as three trademark Foster productions. The massive chart triumph of the title track, a duet with Brandy and produced by Jerkins, is more modern R&B. This is balanced by the classic sweet, keyboard driven sounds of the Diane Warren ballad, “For You I Will.” Produced and arranged by Foster, this beautiful ballad was also included on the soundtrack of the animated movie, “Space Jam,” and became a top 5 hit single. “Inside,” another song written by Warren, follows the same recipe with a perfect arrangement and top-notch vocals by the young singer. A cover of the Richard Marx hit “Right Here Waiting,” sung by Monica with R&B group 112 is another intense ballad that mixes Foster’s classic pop sounds with the new echoes of the R&B world.
