ALL BY MYSELF

From FALLING INTO YOU
Written by Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff

This review is # 100 for our website. To celebrate we have decided to pick one of the songs that David Foster has produced over the years for Céliné Dion. Their musical combo has been one of the most successful in the recent history of pop music and has been one of the absolute pinnacles of Foster’s career. The Canadian songbird often acknowledges her compatriot as the first A-list producer to strongly believe in her talent and tells of how instrumental he was for the launch of her international career.
While browsing through Dion’s catalog, we just couldn’t decide which song to showcase for the amazing quality of their common songbook. We are talking about worldwide smash hits like “Because You Loved Me,” “The Power Of Love,” and “To Love You More,” famous album songs like the stunning “The Colour Of My Love” and “Tell Him,” Academy Awards’ contender “The Prayer,” and the 1996 Olympic Games’ theme, “The Power Of The Dream.” Given our uncertainty, we have recently asked David Foster to pick his favorite tune and the answer is: “All By Myself.” He adds, “Cause I love the arrangement, especially that key change towards the end.”
It really is an incredible musical arrangement and grand production of Eric Carmen’s timeless song that Dion enriches with her out-of-this-world vocals. Her voice slowly builds during this soaring ballad until her dramatic performance arrives at an incredible climax and her voice truly seems to touch the sky. This song was a smash hit in 1997 reaching #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and was also a #1 Adult Contemporary hit as well as a worldwide success.
If you have missed their special collaboration for the few past years, look for “Miracle,” Dion’s new album that Foster produced earlier this year. It will be released next month. It is a labour of love filled with sweet lullabies including a stunning cover of John Lennon’s “Beautiful Boy” that will be the first single.

Lyrics

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Livin’ alone
I think of all the friends I’ve known
When I dial the telephone
Nobody’s home

All by myself
Don’t wanna be
All by myself
Anymore

Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And loves so distant and obscure
Remains the cure

All by myself
Don’t wanna be
All by myself
Anymore
All by myself
Don’t wanna live
All by myself
Anymore

When I was young
I never needed anyone
Making love was just for fun
Those days are gone

All by myself
Don’t wanna be
All by myself
Anymore
All by myself
Don’t wanna live
Oh
Don’t wanna live
By myself, by myself
Anymore
By myself
Anymore
Oh
All by myself
Don’t wanna live
I never, never, never
Needed anyone
