WHAT ABOUT ME

From WHAT ABOUT ME
Written by David Foster, Kenny Rogers & Richard Marx

When Kenny Rogers decided he wanted some pop appeal to crossover from the country music market, he turned to big guns like Lionel Richie, The Bee Gees and, obviously, David Foster for help. In 1982 Foster produced Rogers’ smash hit duet with Sheena Easton, the definitive version of the Bob Seger ballad “We’ve Got Tonight”, then in 1984 they teamed up again to record his new album.

“What About Me” is a good pop collection and its title track is the standout tune on the record. It is a fine ballad where Rogers’ voice is joined by the vocal talents of Kim Carnes (“Bette Davis’ Eyes”) and James Ingram (“Baby Come To Me”). Foster produced this track with his usual class, the vocal interplay between these three talented singers mixed with the sweet arrangements sure result in one of the best ballads of the eighties. It was a Billboard top 15 hit (and #1 AC) in 1984 and one of the last big singles of Rogers’ amazing string of hits. There’s also another great song on this record that Foster produced (written by Rogers with Richard Marx), it is entitled “Crazy” and we suggest you to take a listen to it. Foster and Rogers have collaborated many times through the years. There’s one cd that was released in 1994 entitled “Timepiece – The Orchestral Sessions with David Foster” that is an absolute listening pleasure. It’s an “Unforgettable” kind of project, filled with standards, all masterfully crafted by David Foster to showcase Kenny Rogers’ evergreen vocal talent.

Lyrics

I see you here with me
I’ve waited all my life for someone like you
Someone to give my heart and soul to

I look into your eyes
Your love for me was such a welcome surprise
I think at last I’ve found forever

But what about me?
(I’ll always love you)
What about me?
(I’ll always need you)
You were my love before
But I need so much more of you

Time after time I feel I’m losing my mind
Or maybe this is what lovers must go through
It never entered my mind
We could be wasting our time
What am I gonna do?
But what about me?

No reason to pretend
True love affairs don’t have to come to an end
The moment we don’t have all the answers

I nearly go insane
Each and every time I hear you whisper my name
I feel the same when I’m around you

But what about me?
(I’ll always love you)
What about me?
(I’ll always need you)
This is so hard for me
I wanted so much to be with you

Time after time I feel I’m losing my mind
Or maybe this is what lovers must go through
It never entered my mind
We could be wasting our time
What am I gonna do?

But what about me?
