IN THE ARMS OF LOVE

from THE ONE THING
Written by Michael Bolton, Diane Warren & Desmond Child

In the fall of 1993, Michael Bolton was at the top of his game as a hit-making singer/songwriter. After the immense, multiplatinum success of his 1992 album of covers titled Timeless (The Classics), Bolton published a new collection of original material called The One Thing. Back in the line-up of superstar producers were Walter Afanasieff and David Foster, both responsible for the sublime craft of Timeless (The Classics). On The One Thing, they were joined by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, another top music-maker with previous chart work under his belt for rockers including AC/DC, Foreigner, Bryan Adams and Def Leppard. With Bolton, Lange co-wrote and co-produced the top ten hit single off the album; a catchy pop/rock number titled “Said I Love You… But I Lied.”

STEALING HOME

from STEALING HOME (ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK)

written by David Foster

Summer of 1988 witnessed the release of Stealing Home starring Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster. Although this movie wasn’t a box office hit, it did gain a good number of sales after the video release a few years later. Stealing Home became David Foster’s third movie score after the solid success of both St. Elmo’s Fire in 1985 and The Secret Of My Success in 1987. Foster’s instrumental compositions on Stealing Home carried his renown touching melodies spiced up by impeccable orchestral executions. The meticulous craft of the arrangements was based on Foster’s keyboard-driven sounds with various synths and drum programming that musically defined the Hitman’s productions in the second half of the eighties.

This week to celebrate the Christmas season in style, the Song of the Week has mined another gem from David Foster’s 1993 cd, The Christmas Album. Foster, with the help of master arranger Jeremy Lubbock, delivers a version of “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” that can rightly stand alongside Andy Williams’ 1963 take on this definitive holiday classic.

TIME PASSING

Written by David Foster & Lee Ritenour

This Song of the Week review is “Time Passing,” another of the gorgeous instrumentals from David Foster’s seminal cd, The Symphony Sessions. Released in 1988, this project features the great work of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. It is also the perfect opportunity for the gifted music-maker to showcase his classical background.

YOU’RE THE INSPIRATION

From YOU’RE THE INSPIRATION/ONCE IN A LIFETIME (single)
Written by David Foster & Peter Cetera

“You’re The Inspiration” was one of those classic songs that is a cornerstone in David Foster’s long and successful career. Co-written by The Hitman with Peter Cetera, this power ballad was released in October 1984 as the third single from the multiplatinum Chicago 17. “You’re The Inspiration” was the perfect follow-up to another masterpiece ballad, “Hard Habit To Break.” Like its predecessor, “You’re The Inspiration” jumped to #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and also reached the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. Listening to this magical ballad, it was easy to say all the names involved were at the top of their game. Cetera and Foster were on a collaborative roll and they co-wrote the musical structure of the song in just a few hours. The two music legends could do no wrong.
