MAN ENOUGH TO CRY

from HURRICANE
Written by Eric Benet & Dean Parks

Eric Benet’s 2005 Hurricane cd was a very personal and interesting project. Hurricane  saw the R&B singer/songwriter moving away from the contemporary neo-soul sounds of his previous works in favor of a sophisticated musical landscape influenced by icons of the ’70s like Kenny Loggins, Bill Withers and Christopher Cross. On Hurricane, Benet delivered bittersweet love themes with deep, introspective lyrics, especially on the five tracks helmed by David Foster and Humberto Gatica. One of these tunes was “Man Enough To Cry.”

Eric Benet is one of the most distinctive and talented r&b singers on the music scene.

In 2003, Benet joined forces with his friend, David Foster, to work on his third cd. The initial concept was to deliver an elegant soul album with touches of refined adult contemporary music and echoes of classic acts like Bill Withers and Terry Callier. Benet’s soulful tenor and crystal-clear falsetto mixed well with the quality pop landscapes created by Foster. The atmosphere Foster fashioned was fairly close to a black version of Kenny Loggins. Benet and Foster recorded a handful of songs co-written for the occasion by the singer with Foster and other music luminaries including guitarist Dean Parks, singer/songwriter Danny Peck, keyboardist Neil Larsen and lyricist Linda Thompson.

THROUGH THE FIRE

from FROM E TO U: VOLUME 1
written by David Foster, Tom Keane & Cynthia Weil

The end of May 2014 saw a special Japanese-only release by R&B star Eric Benet entitled “From E To U: Volume 1.” This project is a collection of pop and soul covers of hit songs from the likes of Hall & Oates, Christopher Cross, Journey, Earth, Wind & Fire and several others. Those who loved Benet’s great reworking of the Toto classic “Georgy Porgy” or his 2005 David Foster-produced cd “Hurricane” already witnessed the singer’s passion for quality pop and soul music of the late seventies and early eighties. “From E To U: Volume 1” reinforces this commitment with a handful of elegant songs modernized by Benet with his longtime collaborator Demonte Posey.

Eric Benet’s “Hurricane” is the third album by the talented R&B singer/songwriter. Released in June 2005, it presented in its tracklist a handful of refined songs produced by David Foster and Humberto Gatica. Those tunes were recorded a couple of years earlier and, compared to Benet’s previous, modern R&B efforts, show a different side of the singer, more intimate and acoustic.

THE LAST TIME

From HURRICANE
Written by David Foster, Eric Benet & Amy Foster-Gillies

“The Last Time” is a sublime modern torch song that singer Eric Benet recently created with David Foster and Foster’s daughter, Amy Foster-Gillies. Benet’s gorgeous singing on this composition is reminiscent of the beauty and style of black legends like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
