THROUGH THE FIRE

from FROM E TO U: VOLUME 1
written by David Foster, Tom Keane & Cynthia Weil

The end of May 2014 saw a special Japanese-only release by R&B star Eric Benet entitled “From E To U: Volume 1.” This project is a collection of pop and soul covers of hit songs from the likes of Hall & Oates, Christopher Cross, Journey, Earth, Wind & Fire and several others. Those who loved Benet’s great reworking of the Toto classic “Georgy Porgy” or his 2005 David Foster-produced cd “Hurricane” already witnessed the singer’s passion for quality pop and soul music of the late seventies and early eighties. “From E To U: Volume 1” reinforces this commitment with a handful of elegant songs modernized by Benet with his longtime collaborator Demonte Posey.

In the early eighties, David Foster’s career exploded with top chart hits written and/or produced for Chicago, Kenny Rogers, The Tubes, Kenny Loggins, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Boz Scaggs and several others. Those platinum, award-winning singles and albums put the Canadian-born music-maker on the red-hot list of producers and the rest, as they say, is history. Although of the same top-notch quality of the aforementioned records, those same years witnessed some Foster work that didn’t become as popular and, in some cases, remain a well-kept secret to this day. Dara Sedaka’s “I’m Your Girlfriend” is one of these hidden gems.
