This week we go back to David Foster’s first steps into the music biz as co-founder and driving force of the pop/rock band, Skylark. Skylark released two interesting albums in the first half of the seventies that introduced Foster’s blooming talents to the music world. Skylark included Foster’s first wife, singer/songwriter B. J. Cook, and the wonderful soul singer Donny Gerrard (1946-2022) who was remembered for the 1973 hit ballad, “Wildflower.” That song was a top ten hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 and the Canadian Top Singles charts. “Wildflower” was a huge adult contemporary hit. Since the rise on the charts, “Wildflower” has became an evergreen with multiple recorded versions.

Josh Groban is a international superstar singer, songwriter, musician and producer.

Groban’s sophomore cd, Closer, was originally released in November 2003. Produced mostly by Groban’s mentor, David Foster, Closer was a #1 smash hit and eventually sold over 6 millions copies in the US alone. The inspirational hymn, “You Raise Me Up,” was the first single off this album. It became a huge adult contemporary hit and was a trademark song for Groban with hundreds of subsequent covers.

“Who’s Holding Donna Now” was a 1985 hit single by r&b group, DeBarge. Co-written by David Foster with friends Jay Graydon and Randy Goodrum, Graydon went on to produce it for DeBarge’s Rhythm Of The Night album. “Who’s Holding Donna Now,” with its melodic strength, soulful atmosphere and catchy arrangement provided by Foster and Graydon, became a multi-format hit. The song hit #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #2 R&B and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. DeBarge’s original version was reviewed on these pages and can be found in the archives.

REMEMBER THE FEELING

”Remember The Feeling” was a beautiful ballad recorded by the American supergroup, Chicago. In 1984, Chicago included “Remember The Feeling” on their multi-platinum bestseller, Chicago 17.

Co-written by the late Billy Preston (1946-2006) with songwriter/producer, Bruce Fischer, “You Are So Beautiful” was a beautiful ballad that became an evergreen. Preston was acknowledged as the “Fifth Beatle” for his fabulous organ playing on “Get Back” found on The Beatles’ Let It Be album.
