A LOVE THAT WILL LAST

From MOOD

Written by David Foster & Linda Thompson

In the new millennium, David Foster kept having huge success with his platinum-certified productions for Michael Bublè, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Seal and many more. He also kept co-writing material for his artists although the outcome really couldn’t compare in terms of quantity, quality and chart success to his amazing songwriting work of the previous decades. There are, however, two songs written in the 2000s that belong in Foster’s all-time songbook.

Those are “The Last Time,” co-written and sung around 2002 by Eric Benet and “A Love That Will Last” that The Hitman co-wrote in 2005 with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, for Renee Olstead. Those songs are gorgeous ballads that weren’t chart hits, yet have quickly become fans favorites. Both songs have had their fair share of cover versions.

Recently, Varitda Bhirombhakdi resurrected these songs. Varitda is a very talented pop/jazz singer from Thailand. Her two cds, Mood and Mood 2 – Jazz In The City,  were released in 2019 and 2021 respectively. Both records were recorded live in a Thailand studio by Varitda with a number of great local musicians. The track list of the albums includes those aforementioned Foster gems plus several jazz classics as well as refined pop offerings from Jimmy Webb, Alan Menken and Stevie Wonder. Foster’s modern-day festive classic, “Grown-Up Christmas List” is on Mood 2 – Jazz In The City with “The Last Time.” Today’s Song of the Week is Varitda’s amazing rendition of “A Love That Will Last” that appears on Mood.

The arrangement of “A Love That Will Last” follows the same lines of the one crafted by Foster for Olstead. A tender atmosphere is set by a jazzy trio with beautiful acoustic guitar work and lush strings. Varitda’s vocal performance is quite convincing with a solid mastery of the English language. She doesn’t have a powerful voice, but her sweet vocals suit the material perfectly. Mood also features an instrumental version of “A Love That Will Last” led by saxophonist Pae Sax. The instrumental version is very enjoyable and sounds pretty close to Kenny G’s music.

Lyrics

I want a little something more
Don’t want the middle or the one before
I don’t desire a complicated past
I want a love that will last
Say that you love me
Say I’m the one
Don’t kiss and hug me and then try to run
I don’t do drama
My tears don’t fall fast
I want a love that will last
I don’t want just a memory
Give me forever
Don’t even think about saying goodbye
‘Cause I just want one love to be enough
And remain in my heart till I die
So call me romantic
Oh I guess that must be so
There’s something more that you oughta know
I’ll never leave you
So don’t even ask
I want a love that will last
Forever
I want a love that will last
I don’t just want a memory
Give me forever
Don’t even think about saying goodbye
‘Cause I just want one love to be enough
And remain in my heart till I die
So there’s just a little more that I need
I wanna share all the air that you breathe
I’m not the kind of girl to complicate the past
I want a love that will last
Forever
I want a love the love that last
Always
I just want a love that will last
Want a love that will last
