TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT

from TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT (single)
Written by Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart is a real superstar in the history of rock music. His trademark raspy voice brought music staples to the top of the charts including “Sailing,” “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim),” Do Ya Think I’m Sexy,” “Hot Legs,” “Young Turks” and “Maggie May.”

In September of 1976, “Tonight’s The Night” was released by Stewart as his new US ballad. That now-classic song eventually ruled the charts for eight consecutive weeks and became the North America #1 single of 1977. Written by Stewart, “Tonight’s The Night” was included on the Scottish superstar’s 1976 A Night On The Town album. Produced by the late, revered Tom Dowd (1925-2002), A Night On The Town was a fantastic collection of catchy pop-rockers delivered by the singer with the support of a slew of terrific session aces. David Foster can be heard playing keyboards on those sessions and the Hitman recently revealed to us that it was him playing the majestic Hammond B3 organ on “Tonight’s The Night.” His superior playing coupled with the beautiful saxophone solo by Jerry Jumonville, acoustic guitars, piano and strings created an intimate, warm atmosphere where the iconic singer easily added his heartfelt vocal performance with outstanding results. The French background lyrics were provided by Britt Ekland who was dating Stewart at the time. “Tonight’s The Night” was one of the most loved songs of Stewart’s repertoire. It recently ranked #19 on Billboard’s Hot 100 All-Time Chart (1958-2018).

Lyrics

Stay away from my window
Stay away from my back door too
Disconnect the telephone line
Relax baby and draw that blind

Kick off your shoes and sit right down
Loosen off that pretty French gown
Let me pour you a good long drink
Ooh baby don’t you hesitate cause

Tonight’s the night
It’s gonna be alright
‘Cause I love you girl
Ain’t nobody gonna stop us now

Come on angel my hearts on fire
Don’t deny your man’s desire
You’d be a fool to stop this tide
Spread your wings and let me come inside

Tonight’s the night
It’s gonna be alright
‘Cause I love you girl
Ain’t nobody gonna stop us now

Don’t say a word my virgin child
Just let your inhibitions run wild
The secret is about to unfold
Upstairs before the night’s too old

Tonight’s the night
It’s gonna be alright
‘Cause I love you woman
Ain’t nobody gonna stop us now
