SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME

from SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME (single)

written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman

The song “Save The Last Dance For Me” was co-written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It became a big hit in the sixties for The Drifters under the production of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This evergreen was later covered by many stars; among them Dolly Parton that made “Save The Last Dance For Me” a multi-format hit in 1983.

Recently, the most successful rendition was recorded by Michael Buble who included it on his 2005 multi-platinum album “It’s Time.” Produced by David Foster, “Save The Last Dance For Me” was released as the third single from “It’s Time.” It became an Adult Contemporary Top Five hit and a minor entry on Billboard’s Hot 100. The single included the Foster/Jerry Hey-arranged album version as well as several dance remixes that went to #22 on the Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart. Buble’s version of “Save The Last Dance For Me” is very catchy with the singer’s silky voice on top of a Latin fiesta that has guitars, piano, percussion and horns leading the dance. Foster’s production was his trademark flawless affair. Buble’s “Save The Last Dance For Me” was eventually included in the soundtrack of the 2013 hit movie, “The Big Wedding” starring Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton. Buble and Foster went on to have a great live performance of this ear-candy song on the 2008 DVD “Hitman: David Foster & Friends.”

Lyrics

You can dance-every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight
You can smile-every smile for the man
Who held your hand neath the pale moon light
But don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darlin’ save the last dance for me

Oh I know that the music’s fine
Like sparklin’ wine, go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we’re apart
Don’t give your heart to anyone
But don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darlin’ save the last dance for me

Baby don’t you know I love you so
Can’t you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you oh so much

You can dance, go and carry on
Till the night is gone
And it’s time to go
If he asks if you’re all alone
Can he walk you home, you must tell him no
‘Cause don’t forget who’s taking you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
Save the last dance for me

Oh I know that the music’s fine
Like sparklin’ wine, go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we’re apart
Don’t give your heart to anyone

And don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darling, save the last dance for me

So don’t forget who’s taking you home
Or in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darling, Save the last dance for me

Oh baby won’t you save the last dance for me
Oh baby won’t you promise that you’ll save,
The last dance for me
Save the last dance, the very last dance for me.
