I LEARNED FROM THE BEST

From MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE
Written by Diane Warren

In 1998, Whitney Houston released a new album entitled “My Love Is Your Love.” It was a state of the art affair that involved the cream of the nu soul/hip-hop music makers like Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean of The Fugees, Missy Elliot, Rodney Jerkins plus legendary mainstream powerhouses including Babyface and David Foster.

“My Love Is Your Love” was a step into a new sound for the singer while still having its fair share of traditional big pop/r&b ballads. The album sold over four million copies in the US and spawned five hit singles on the charts. “My Love Is Your Love” is chock full of special guests like Mariah Carey who duets with Houston on Babyface’s hit ballad, “When You Believe” from the soundtrack of “Prince of Egypt,” Faith Evans and Kelly Price who lent their voices to another uptempo hit, “Heartbreak Hotel,” plus Missy Elliot, Shanice, Sheila E., Greg Phillinganes and Mark Kibble of Take 6.

Foster produced and arranged the power ballad “I Learned From The Best.” Penned by hit maker Diane Warren, “I Learned From The Best” was the fifth and final hit single off the album reaching #27 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #20 on AC while a remix of the song went to #1 on the dance charts. “I Learned From The Best” presents Diane Warren’s typical memorable melody and refrain. Houston’s vocal performance is impeccably backed up by Foster’s standard array of keyboards, synth horns and strings.

Early in 2009 brought the welcome news of a brand new collaboration between Whitney Houston and David Foster for her comeback album that should be released before the end of the year. A new song, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” was again penned by the incomparable hit maker Diane Warren and we can predict it’ll be another perfect vehicle for the superstar’s amazing vocal talent.

Lyrics

Did you really think that
I would really take you back
Let you back in my heart one more time
Ohh. no. no.
Did you think that I still care
That there be more feeling there
Did you think you could walk back in my life.
So you found you miss the love you threw away.
Baby but you found it out too late. too late.
Chorus:and so now you know the way it feels to cry
The way that I cried when you broke my world in two.
Baby I learned the way to break a heart
I learned from the best.
I learned from you.
Oh baby now.
I learned from you
I remember cold nights
Tears I though would never dry
How you shattered my world
With your goodbye.your goodbye baby
Woulde sold my soul then.
Just to have you back again
Now youe the last thing on my mind.
Now you say your sorry and
Youe changed your ways
Sorry but you changed you ways too late.
Chorus
So when all youe got are sleepless nights
When those tears are clouding up your eyes
Just remember it was you who said goodbye
Who said goodbye.
Instrumental break
Chorus
