ISN’T SHE LOVELY

From CAPTAIN FINGERS
Written by Stevie Wonder

“Isn’t She Lovely” is one of the most beloved and successful songs in Stevie Wonder’s entire career. Through the years this sweet, joyful song has been covered several times by many big names. One of the most interesting and personal covers was recorded in 1977 by guitar legend Lee Ritenour who included it on his album “Captain Fingers.” Rit completely reworked the song and brought it into his own “fusion land.” You can’t help but appreciate the artistry of Ritenour and his partners in crime, David Foster on electric piano, the late, unforgettable Jeff Porcaro on drums, Porcaro’s brother Mike on bass, Ray Parker Jr. on rhythm guitar, and the incomparable Bill Champlin doing vocals. Foster also had a hand in the arrangement of the song. Yet Champlin, along with Ritenour, is the true star. Champlin’s performance is very powerful yet smooth and elegant. The coda of the song provides an intricate duel of Champlin’s scat vocals and Rit’s superb guitar. This song would be the first of many collaborations between the legendary guitarist and Mr. Foster.

Lyrics

Isn’t she lovely
Isn’t she wonderful
Isn’t she precious
Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we’d be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn’t she lovely made from love

Isn’t she pretty
Truly the angel’s best
Boy, I’m so happy
We have been heaven blessed
I can’t believe what God has done
through us he’s given life to one
But isn’t she lovely made from love

Isn’t she lovely
Life and love are the same
Life is Aisha
The meaning of her name
Londie, it could have not been done
Without you who conceived the one
That’s so very lovely made from love
