Summer of 1988 witnessed the release of Stealing Home starring Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster. Although this movie wasn’t a box office hit, it did gain a good number of sales after the video release a few years later. Stealing Home became David Foster’s third movie score after the solid success of both St. Elmo’s Fire in 1985 and The Secret Of My Success in 1987. Foster’s instrumental compositions on Stealing Home carried his renown touching melodies spiced up by impeccable orchestral executions. The meticulous craft of the arrangements was based on Foster’s keyboard-driven sounds with various synths and drum programming that musically defined the Hitman’s productions in the second half of the eighties.

The title track opened the album and was another good chapter in the long history of Foster’s elegant pop instrumentals. On this number, Foster tried to find the same sparkle as “Love Theme From St. Elmo’s Fire.” Like on that glorious hit, the instrumental’s evocative feel was beautifully brought to life by Foster’s superior performance on keyboards. He was well supported by his usual partners in crime; Dean Parks on acoustic guitar, Michael Landau on electric guitar and Dave Boruff who carried the melody with his warm saxophone. The Stealing Home: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack also included a string of oldies that fit the movie’s sixties setting, yet didn’t attract the ears of younger audiences. Even though there’s no evidence to verify this statement, a different set of songs, some catchy originals like those included on Foster’s previous scores, would have probably increased the album’s commercial appeal. The only contemporary vocal number on the record was “And When She Danced,” a love ballad sung by Foster and Marilyn Martin that featured one of those killer pop melodies and refrain that deserved better luck on the Adult Contemporary chart.
