“‘Let Your Feelings Show’ was my first attempt to write a real ‘Earth, Wind & Fire’ song. I ‘borrowed’ the key elements from many of their songs to finally arrive at those chords and tempo. Maurice, of course, helped so much [by] adding his wizard touches to make it immediately sound like an Earth, Wind & Fire classic. I also played keyboards on it like I did for all the compositions I co-wrote for them.”

David Foster sent this note about “Let Your Feelings Show,” one of the magnificent album tracks that he co-wrote with the incredible Maurice White (1941-2016) and supreme lyricist Allee Willis (1947-2019). Foster wrote “Let Your Feelings Show” for the super-group’s 1979 double platinum release, I Am. “Let Your Feelings Show” was an energetic funk masterpiece that closed side A of the album, perfectly changing the atmosphere after the sweet, tender sounds of “After The Love Has Gone.” The monster instrumental track was a blaze with smokin’ rhythm guitars, commanding bass, inspiring keyboards, strong percussions, swinging strings and powerful horns. On top of such a funk fest were Earth, Wind & Fire’s trademark vocals flying high with Reese’s handling the lead vocals and Philip Bailey adding his genius acrobatic harmonies to the mix. “Let Your Feelings Show” and the whole I Am album demonstrate, without any doubt, that White and Foster, during that week spent at Maurice’s home in Carmel, co-wrote some glorious stuff that will remain in history books as some of pop music’s finest examples.

Woke up Sunday morning feeling out of tune
Wrapped my eyes around you, love came in the room
Baby, gonna let my feelings show
Everyday, gonna learn to love you more

Laughing into midnight, lover being my guide
We approach the morning feeling good inside
Baby, gonna let my feelings show
Everyday, gonna learn to love you more

Paying dues and changes, living day to day
Love is necessary to help you find the way
Baby, gonna let my feelings show
Everyday

The result was commercially and artistically astounding. The song became an out-of-the-box hit by reaching the top ten on both sides of the pond which paved the way to the double platinum triumph of I AM. On this spirited anthem, the band kept their trademark lush orchestrations and smart chord progression that were above the average disco stuff heard on radios in those days. The fantastic vocals by Maurice White and Philip Bailey with a noteworthy support from female R&B group The Emotions were a total knock-out as were Willis’ personal lyrics. The backing track of the tune was smoking hot with guest David Foster who co-wrote the bulk of I AM with White and Willis plus being right on target with his rhythmic acoustic piano playing.

Co-writer Jon Lind gave an interesting interview to SongwriterUniverse where, among other things, he described the genesis of “Boogie Wonderland”:
“Maurice told me he was looking for a disco song for a group he was producing called Curtis, The Brothers. I went to Allee’s house, and…we wrote “Boogie Wonderland.” Maurice loved it, and cut it on Curtis, The Brothers. David Foster played piano on the track with George Massenburg engineering. Curtis, The Brothers sang it, but didn’t quite seem to get the vibe of it. Maurice pulled me aside and asked how I liked it. Although the track was amazing, I said I wasn’t sure about their vocals. He laughed, and assured me, ‘I think you got a hit.’ 24 hours later, my phone rang and it’s Maurice. He said The Brothers hate the song and they don’t want it on their album. The next day, Maurice and Phillip Bailey put their amazing vocals on “Boogie Wonderland” and added The Emotions to sing new backgrounds. A month later, “Boogie Wonderland” was released as the first single from their album I AM, and the reaction was nuts. Wow, what a turn-around. My first high-profile hit.”

“Boogie Wonderland,” like the entire I AM album, was rich in other Foster co-written masterpieces including “After The Love Has Gone” and “In The Stone” that kept EWF at the top of the charts worldwide. As already known, that record started Foster’s career as a songwriter and producer with a bang , but “Boogie Wonderland” was also a springboard for Lind and Willis who eventually went on to write more hits for a who’s who of music stars. Lind co-wrote staples including Madonna’s “Crazy For You” and Vanessa Williams’ “Save The Best For Last” while Willis co-wrote hits including The Rembrandt’s “I’ll Be There For You” and Pet Shop Boys featuring Dusty Springfield on “What Have I Done To Deserve This.”
Sadly, we have to add one final paragraph to this review as we’ve just learned of Maurice White’s passing. Maurice White was a genius, a visionary and one of the most brilliant musical minds that ever graced our planet. He will be greatly missed. R.I.P.

Virtuoso musician Alphonso Johnson is one of the modern legends of bass guitar. His eclectic talent, superior technique and fantastic groove is appreciated worldwide by jazz, rock and r&b audiences. During the course of his long and remarkable career, Johnson has played alongside people like Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Pat Metheny, Pino Daniele, Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead, George Duke, Gov’t Mule and Chuck Mangione.

He was also a member of rock legends Santana and seminal jazz/rock masters The Weather Report. In the second half of the seventies, right after his very fortunate stint with The Weather Report, Johnson signed a three record deal with Epic Records.

The first two albums, “Moonshadows” and “Yesterday’s Dreams,” were solid jazz/funk affairs produced by Skip Drinkwater. Drinkwater was a hot name in the fusion circle and worked with Lee Ritenour, Norman Connors and others. Those two albums included some of the most revered names in jazz/fusion including the aforementioned Ritenour, Patrice Rushen, Narada Michael Walden, Ndugu Chancler, Chuck Findley and Grover Washington, Jr. “Yesterday’s Dreams” also features a young David Foster playing organ on the opening track and the lead single, “Love’s The Way I Feel ‘Bout Cha.” That song is an infectious funk jam co-written by Johnson with Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire fame. Bailey also sings on “Love’s The Way I Feel ‘Bout Cha” with the fantastic Dianne Reeves. Another great touch on the track was added with Washington ‘s trademark tenor sax solo, Patrice Rushen on the electric piano, a very young Sheila Escovedo hot on the congas and Foster, as previously mentioned, playing the organ. “Yesterday’s Dreams” marked the first appearance on a record by the now famous Sheila E. This album is a good example of the American jazz/funk sounds of the seventies with its influences ranging from EWF’s funk to Ritenour’s fusion. Although it does not include a memorable composition, “Yesterday’s Dreams” was a good vehicle to appreciate Johnson’s superior artistry and the fantastic skills of his all-star supporting players.

“Hard To Say I’m Sorry” is without a doubt one of the milestones of David Foster’s career. This ballad, co-written by the Canadian music-maker with Peter Cetera, started Chicago’s amazing comeback story of the Eighties. It is the epitome of that era’s adult contemporary ballad with its amazing melody, perfect vocals, layered synths and powerful guitars wrapped up by Foster’s high-tech production. In 1982, the song went #1 for two weeks in the US and eventually became an international hit.

Like it often happens with this kind of evergreens, “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” was covered, through the years, by a number of singers and groups. The most famous cover was released in 1997 by R&B group Az Yet and featured Cetera’s cameo vocals as well as Foster’s production of the remix. It went to #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Az Yet’s version also became a worldwide hit, reaching the top ten in several countries.

There were a couple of other high profile covers of this modern-day standard; one by Irish boy band Westlife and the other by the legendary Barry Manilow.
Manilow’s take was included on his 2008 album, “The Greatest Songs Of The Eighties.” As the title suggests, it was a compilation of some of the best romantic songs of that decade. “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” was remade by the veteran superstar with class and good taste. An interesting bonus was the presence of Chicago’s James Pankow. He arranged the horns and played his trombone along with Ray Herrman on sax and Lee Thornburg on trumpet. Jason Scheff, the gifted tenor singer who replaced Cetera in 1986, sang the backing vocals. These guest appearances obviously gave the song a welcome echo of the classic Chicago sound. Manilow’s confidant voice was the usual ear-candy and delivered a very good re-recording of this timeless song.

Lyrics

“Everybody needs a little time away,” I heard her say, “from each other.”
“Even lover’s need a holiday far away from each other.”
Hold me now. It’s hard for me to say I’m sorry. I just want you to stay.

After all that we’ve been through, I will make it up to you. I promise to.
And after all that’s been said and done,
You’re just the part of me I can’t let go.

Couldn’t stand to be kept away just for the day from your body.
Wouldn’t wanna be swept away, far away from the one that I love.
Hold me now. It’s hard for me to say I’m sorry. I just want you to know.
Hold me now. I really want to tell you I’m sorry. I could never let you go.

After all that we’ve been through, I will make it up to you. I promise to.
And after all that’s been said and done,
You’re just the part of me I can’t let go.

After all that we’ve been through, I will make it up to you. I promise to.

You’re gonna be the lucky one.
The post HARD TO SAY I’M SORRY first appeared on SONG OF THE WEEK.

from A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SOUNDTRACK

written by John Williams & Cynthia Weil

“A.I. Artificial Intelligence” is a 2001 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law. It was another box office hit for the extraordinary movie maker. The soundtrack was written by frequent Spielberg collaborator, the legendary John Williams. A five-time Academy Awards winner with an outstanding 48 nominations, Williams also has 21 Grammy Awards out of 59 nominations under his belt. The composer is also the father of Toto’s lead singer Joseph Williams.

For the soundtrack of “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” one of Williams’ themes was given to famous lyricist Cynthia Weil who added some perfectly fitting lyrics to it. The title of the song became “For Always.” Who better to ask than David Foster to produce such an important ballad? The gifted producer crafted a beautiful adult contemporary song with the help of two of the best singers in the genre, Josh Groban and Lara Fabian. The Belgian/Italian singer recorded a solo version of this love song that was included on the soundtrack. Yet, the real standout is the duet with Groban that’s an absolute must-listen. William’s original melody is transposed in the pop world by Foster’s evocative arrangement with the two amazing singers caressing listeners supported by Foster’s delicate piano and the orchestra arranged by William Ross. Again, Williams was nominated for the Academy Awards on this score. It’s kinda surprising that “For Always,” truly an enchanting ballad, didn’t get a nod given its superior quality.

Lyrics

I close my eyes
And there in the shadows I see your light
You come to me out of my dreams across
The night

You take my hand
Though you may be so many stars away
I know that our spirits and souls are one
We’ve circled the moon and we’ve touched the sun
So here we’ll stay

For Always
Forever
Beyond here and on to eternity
For Always
Forever
For us there’s no time and no space
No barrier love won’t erase
Wherever you go
I still know in my heart you will be
With me

From this day on
I’m certain that I’ll never be alone
I know what my heart must have always known
That love has a power that’s all its own

And for always
Forever
Now we can fly

And for always
and always
We will go on beyond goodbye

For Always
Forever
Beyond here and on to eternity
For Always
And ever
You’ll be a part of me

And For Always
Forever
A thousand tomorrows may cross the sky
And for always
And always
We will go on beyond goodbye
The post FOR ALWAYS first appeared on SONG OF THE WEEK.
