From FUNK IN MASON JAR
Written by David Foster & Harvey Mason

David Foster has written and produced many funky/r&b anthems during the seventies, fantastic dance records like Cheryl Lynn’s “Got To Be Real”, Earth, Wind & Fire’s “In The Stone” and “Let Your Feeling Show”, Deniece Williams’ “I’ve Got The Next Dance”, The Brothers Johnson’s “Blam”… not too bad for the so-called “King Of Ballads”, huh? Another one of these dance numbers is a thing he co-wrote, in 1977, with Harvey Mason for the drummer’s “Funk In A Mason Jar” album. The song is entitled “Till You Take My Love” and you can find it on many “rare grooves” compilations as a great example of the funky/soul of that era. Merry Clayton sang the song that is driven by Mason’s percussions and Mike Porcaro’s bass while on guitar you can find Ray Parker jr. and Jay Graydon. Add Foster on electric piano, David Paich on acoustic piano and the Tower Of Power Horns and what you get is a hot and spicy musical meal.

Mason released a few albums between the seventies and the eighties (a couple of them include Foster’s co-written material) and he has been an ace session player for many years. In the nineties he has become the driving force behind the contemporary jazz quarter “Fourplay” together with Bob James, Nathan East and Lee Ritenour (Larry Carlton has taken Rit’s spot in the past few years).
