Around 1995, David Foster started his own record company, 143 Records, in a joint venture with the Warner Music Group. Among the first artists to be signed on 143 Records were The Corrs and Jordan Hill. With hits like “Runaway” and “Breathless,” The Corrs’ innovative mix of catchy pop sounds with traditional Irish music was a winner and brought them quickly to the top of the international music charts. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the young and gifted Ms. Hill.

As usual, Foster meticulously crafted Ms. Hill’s self-titled debut cd with an impressive cast of collaborators and the same musical recipe that brought a string of giant hits on the charts for many artists. Sure, Jordan Hill spawned a couple of minor hits, but without leaving any solid mark for this newcomer. Ms. Hill had an impressive voice, but the overall flavor of Jordan Hill was a tad too much in the vein of Mariah Carey and music fans probably perceived Ms. Hill as a first-class copycat. The album had many fine moments including the danceable first single and previous Song of the Week, “For The Love Of You,” or a string of killer ballads like the second single, “How Many Times.” However, Ms. Hill didn’t win the hearts of radio programmers or music lovers. Foster was 100% behind Jordan Hill . He enlisted up’n’coming producers including Mario Winans and Soulshock & Karlin to work with him on the more up-tempo material. Foster co-wrote great adult contemporary ballads such as “Until The End Of Time” with Brian McKnight and another chart entry, “Remember Me This Way,” with his then-wife, Linda Thompson. Throughout the record, Ms. Hill, who was just 18 years old at the time of this recording, really did an amazing job under the Hitman’s direction. Additionally, it was another clever move to cover the classic 1979 Bee Gees’ hit, “Too Much Heaven,” featuring the unmistakable voice of Sir Barry Gibb.

“Too Much Heaven” is the pick for Song of the Week.

Foster arranged “Too Much Heaven” with great respect for the Bee Gees’ original, only adding programmed drums and synths that were the obvious choices in the nineties. Ms. Hill’s performance was perfect, powerful and accurate. She delivered a bit too much of Mariah Carey’s vocal tricks, yet definitely made this song her own. A total bonus? Sir Gibb’s unique harmonies that blended wonderfully with Ms. Hill’s amazing vocal. “Too Much Heaven” was eventually released as a single in the UK. However, it didn’t make the chart.

written by David Foster & Brian McKnight

Jordan Hill’s 1996 ballad, “Until The End Of Time,” is the only writing collaboration between David Foster and r&b star Brian McKnight to make it on record. These two gifted music-makers have crossed paths in concert and the recording studio. McKnight claims fame for big hits like “Back At One,” “Love Is” (with Vanessa Williams) and “One Last Cry.” McKnight has always mentioned Foster as a mentor and inspiration as well as being a fixture on the Hitman’s famous Foster & Friends touring franchise.

Ms. Hill was signed by Foster for her impressive voice, style and looks that fit in the Mariah Carey pop/r&b/ac “diva” cliche of the era. “Until The End Of Time” found its way onto Ms. Hill’s self-titled debut cd for Foster’s 143 Records. Given the golden touch of its top-notch co-writers, “Until The End Of Time” was a great showcase of adult contemporary bravura with perfect melodic pleasure, catchiness and dramatic power in its musical development. On “Until The End Of Time,” the young singer delivered the goods and was joined by the warm baritone voice of Delious Kennedy, founding member of the r&b vocal quartet All-4-One. The vocal interplay between the two young performers was really impressive. They blended the harmonies with powerful crescendos and “money notes” on the song’s commanding climax. Foster’s elegant arrangement was based on various keyboards and programmed percussions which served Ms. Hill and Delious perfectly. The final result was a tender love ballad that was total nirvana for adult contemporary lovers.

Jordan Hill was chocked-full of classy, adult contemporary material as well as pop ditties and r&b goodies. Check out past reviews of the hit ballad “Remember Me This Way” that can be heard onJordan Hill and on the soundtrack of Casper. Also read and hear the danceable hit single “For The Love Of You” for more insight on the Jordan Hill cd.

In the fall of 2010 to celebrate David Foster’s successful Asian tour, Warner Music Group released a comprehensive compilation in those territories entitled “The Magic Of David Foster & Friends.” It’s a two-cd set that includes a large portion of Foster’s most important hits starting from the late seventies up to his most recent chart toppers.

“The Magic Of David Foster & Friends” presents a who’s who of modern pop music superstars like Madonna, Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Andrea Bocelli, Seal, Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Michael Bublè and many, many more. Listening to these unforgettable songs, we can fully appreciate Foster’s unique ability to create evergreens that stand the test of time.

Jordan Hill’s “Remember Me This Way” is a track on the album that Foster co-wrote with his ex-wife Linda Thompson for the soundtrack of the 1995 movie “Casper.” Although it wasn’t a giant hit as most of the others included on this compilation, it is a perfect example of Foster’s talent writing a pop ballad. The production is top notch and Hill’s voice is powerful and impressive. We still think Jordan could have been as big as Christina Aguilera, but unfortunately it hasn’t happen. We suggest you to look for her Foster-produced debut album simply titled “Jordan Hill.” It includes some more Foster gems and great performances by the young singer. Obviously, we feel every serious music lover should own “The Magic Of David Foster & Friends” to appreciate the fantastic career of this music giant.

Lyrics

Every now and then
We find a special friend
Who never lets us down
Who understands it all
Reaches out each time you fall
You’re the best friend that I’ve found
I know you can’t stay
A part of you will never ever go away
Your heart will stay
I’ll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way
I don’t need eyes to see
The love you bring to me
No matter where I go
And I know that you’ll be there
Forever more a part of me, you’re everywhere
I’ll always care
I’ll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way
And I’ll be right behind your shoulder watching you
I’ll be standing by your side and all you do
And I won’t ever leave
As long as you believe
You just believe
I’ll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
