from THE GATE

written by David Foster, Jay Graydon & Bill Champlin

Kurt Elling is one of the best jazz singers today. His remarkable four-octave voice and top notch improvisational skills are again in the spotlight on his newly released album “The Gate.”

Produced by the great Don Was, “The Gate” offers fantastic renditions of jazz, pop, rock and soul classics originally performed by legends like King Crimson, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Joe Jackson and Earth, Wind & Fire. Elling takes this very eclectic material and reworks it to make it his own. What’s really fascinating is to witness how quality soul/pop music can have new life in the jazz world under the expert guidance of Elling and Was. Elling’s voice magically hypnotizes the listener on his take of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” as well as the swinging Joe Jackson classic, “Steppin’ Out.” Elling also reinvent two soul classics – Wonder’s “Golden Lady” and Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic ballad, “After The Love Has Gone.” The David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin co-written evergreen is given a delicate rendition with a moving, passionate vocal performance by the singer accompanied by the warm sax of Bob Mintzer. On this song, and throughout the whole album, the musicianship is first class with amazing playing and soloing by jazz greats like the aforementioned Mintzer, John Patitucci on bass, John McLean on guitar and Elling’s longtime collaborator Laurence Hobgood on piano. “The Gate” reached #7 on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart. We recommend you lose yourself to its sounds; it is really worth it.

Lyrics

For awhile to love was all we could do
we were young and we knew
and our eyes were alive
Deep inside we knew our love was true
For awhile we paid no mind to the past
we knew love would last
Ev’ry night somethin’ right
would invite us to begin the dance

Somethin’ happened along the way
what used to be happy was sad
Somethin’ happened along the way
and yesterday was all we had
And oh after the love has gone
how could you lead me on
and not let me stay around
Oh oh oh afterthe love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found

For awhile to love each other with all
we would ever need
Love was strong for so long
never knew that what was
wrong oh baby wasn’t right
We tried to find what we had
till sadness was all we shared
We were scared this affair would lead our love into
Somethin’ happened along the way
yesterday was all we had
Somethin’ happened along the way
what used to be happy is sad

Somethin’ happened along the way
oh yesterday was all we had
And oh after the love has gone
how could you lead me on
and not let me stay around
Oh oh oh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found

Oh oh oh oh oh oh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found
Oh woh woh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found

Oh woh woh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found
Oh woh woh
Oh woh woh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found

Woh woh woh after the love has gone
what used to be right is wrong
Can love that’s lost be found
The post AFTER THE LOVE HAS GONE first appeared on SONG OF THE WEEK.
