from EVEN IF MY HEART WOULD BREAK (single)

written by Franne Golde & Adrian Gurvitz

Like him or not, sax superstar Kenny Gorelick, better known as Kenny G, is the all-time best seller in the instrumental pop/contemporary jazz arena. His overall sales exceeded an astonishing 75 million records worldwide. In 1992, the Seattle-born instrumentalist released his Breathless cd that went on to sell over 12 million copies in the US and 15 million worldwide. A large part of that cd was produced by Gorelick with a few selected tracks helmed by David Foster and Walter Afanasieff. The Hitman with Afanasieff co-produced the two vocal numbers; “By The Time This Night Is Over” with r&b star Peabo Bryson and “Even If My Heart Would Break” featuring the unmistakable voice of Aaron Neville of Neville Brothers fame. The first song is the subject of a past review and became a solid, multi-format hit.

“Even If My Heart Would Break” was also included on the mega-successful soundtrack of the late Whitney Houston’s (August 9, 1963 to February 11, 2012) hit movie, The Bodyguard. This adult contemporary ballad sported a catchy arrangement crafted by Foster and Kenny G with a classy backing track to support Neville’s trademark voice. The New Orleans-born singer has been referred to as “the human oboe” for his unique vocal style. “Even If My Heart Would Break” was co-written by two veteran singers/songwriters of the pop/rock era: Franne Golde and Adrian Gurvitz. Golde co-wrote top hits like “Nightshift” for The Commodores and “Don’t Look Any Further” sung by Dennis Edwards, the former lead singer of The Temptations. Gurvitz was best remembered for his 1982 solo hit “Classic” and co-wrote stuff for the likes of Hot Chocolate, REO Speedwagon and Cece Winans. “Even If My Heart Would Break” certainly gave the two tunesmiths the most successful song of their careers with the combined sales of both Breathless and The Bodyguard.

Superior performances by Neville and Kenny G, a polished production and an ear-candy melody made “Even If My Heart Would Break” destined to be a surefire hit. Yet, previous over-exposure resulted in the song only hitting the 1994 Top 30 Adult Contemporary category at #28.

Lyrics

I’ve been around this world
I’ve been a lot of places
Seen a million faces in a thousand times
But when I looked into your eyes
I knew I found heaven
And I’ve been wanting to tell you
I never want to let you go

It may be winter in Eden
But what I’m feeling is summer in my heart
Is it too familiar to say I love you
Would you be suspicious if I asked your name, tell me
What would it take to really convince you
That I’m gonna love you, even if my heart would break

Seen a better day
I can feel it coming
I can hear it coming in the winter night
‘Cause you turned this man into a true believer
When you left your traces on that moonlit night

It may be winter in Eden
But when I’m with you, with you, it’s summer in my heart
Is it too familiar to say I love you
Would you be suspicious if I asked your name, tell me
What would it take to really convince you
That I’m gonna love you even if my heart would break

It may be winter in Eden
But when I’m with you, with you, it’s always summer in my heart
So let the mountains tumble, tumble to the sea
Let the rivers overflow, it won’t bother me
Let the stars go out tonight, ’cause I can see them in your eyes
I’m gonna love you even if my heart would break

Is it too familiar to say I love you
Would you be suspicious if I asked your name, tell me
What would it take to really convince you
That I’m gonna love you even if my heart would break
Even if my heart would break, I’m gonna love you
Even if my heart would break, I’m gonna love you
Let the stars go out tonight ’cause I can see them in your eyes
And I’m gonna love you, even if my heart would break
