I’M YOUR MAN

From CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE
Written by Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen is a true Canadian icon and one of the most gifted and influential singers/songwriters of the past fifty years. This Quebecois legend was inducted in 2008 at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and is also a renowned poet, novelist and painter. In 1988, Cohen released the critically-praised I’m Your Man album that had gems including “First We Take Manhattan,” “ Tower Of Song ,” “Everybody Knows” and the title track, “I’m Your Man.” This last composition sported some sensual, almost lustful, lyrics whispered by Cohen on a carpet of synthesizers and programmed drums.

“I’m Your Man” was reinvented by two other illustrious Canadians, Michael Bublè and David Foster, for Bublè’s 2007 multi-platinum cd, Call Me Irresponsible. With his mature and warm performance, Bublè gave the correct weight to Cohen’s beautiful words. The triumph of this new recording of “I’m Your Man” was guaranteed by The Hitman’s refined arrangement that set the track in a smoky jazz club of the fifties. Humberto Gatica’s unique ear and state of the art sound supported in the creation of this musical magic while revered jazz arranger Don Sebesky embellished the backing track with the most perfect strings and horns. Add to the picture the world-class playing of Foster on keyboards, Dean Parks on guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Brian Bromberg on bass and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
Enjoying “I’m Your Man” today gives a bittersweet feeling of regret. Although Bublè and Foster are still close friends, they aren’t working together anymore. A song like this demonstrates their union was a pure pleasure to the ears. It is further evidence of the perfection of their common work that stands as some of the most commercially and artistically successful work in the new Millennium.

Lyrics

If you want a lover
I’ll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I’ll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I’m your man
If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I’ll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I’m your man

Ah, the moon’s too bright
The chain’s too tight
The beast won’t go to sleep
I’ve been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I’d crawl to you baby
And I’d fall at your feet
And I’d howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I’d claw at your heart
And I’d tear at your sheet
I’d say please, please
I’m your man

And if you’ve got to sleep
A moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
I’ll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I’m your man

If you want a lover
I’ll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I’ll wear a mask for you
