Co-written in the early fifties by Victor Young and Edward Heyman, “When I Fall In Love” has become a popular American standard that has been covered by dozens of musical superstars including Tony Bennett, Doris Day, Karen Carpenter, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis and Rod Stewart. This classic has also been performed by jazz greats Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Chet Baker and Keith Jarrett.
In the course of his illustrious career, David Foster has delivered quite a few different productions of this timeless evergreen. The Canadian music-maker re-worked “When I Fall In Love” for Celine Dion and Clive Griffin, Kenny Rogers, Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole and, more recently, the exceptional Andrea Bocelli. In 2007, Foster gave one of his rare vocal performances as a duet of this song with the talented Swedish singer, Lisa Lovbrand.
Two of Foster’s productions of “When I Fall In Love” went on to collect well-deserved Grammy Awards. In 1994, the Celine Dion/Clive Griffin hit duet from the movie “Sleepless In Seattle” won a trophy as “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals” for Foster and Jeremy Lubbock. Three years later, the Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole virtual duet collected two awards. Foster and collaborator Alan Broadbent walked away with the “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals” while Cole and her late dad won as “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.” The Cole duet was a traditional pop affair that continues the successful job that Foster started a few years earlier with “Unforgettable,” another multiple Grammy Winner.
“When I Fall In Love” has a smooth, elegant backing track that gives Natalie and her legendary dad a wonderful scenario for their silky vocals. The song’s lush strings only enhanced the tune’s romantic power. The players on this melody were giants including John Guerin on drums, John Chiodini on guitar, Chuck Domanico on bass, Terry Trotter on piano and Dan Higgins who played a warm saxophone solo.
A few years ago on Foster’s “Hitman Returns” DVD, Natalie performed this arrangement of “When I Fall In Love” with the fabulous Ruben Studdard who did an amazing job singing Nat King Cole’s part. Foster backed up these two great performers on his piano.
