SMILE

from SMILE/IS IT SCARY (single)

Music by Charlie Chaplin Lyrics by John Turner & Geoffrey Parsons

Michael Jackson’s gorgeous rendition of  “Smile” was intended to be the final single off his 1995 “HIStory” album, but it was removed a few days prior to its release. The few copies of the single that are available today come from countries where the promotion started before the label decided to delete it.The few copies out there have become high priced collector items. The late “King Of Pop” stated that his take of the Charlie Chaplin classic was the best recording he ever did. Consequently, this David Foster produced track has become very special to fans worldwide. Foster recently performed “Smile” as part of a tribute to Jackson included on his “Hitman Returns” show with country superstar Martina McBride handling lead vocals. “Smile” was also emotionally performed by Jermaine Jackson during his brother’s memorial service in July of 2009. Recently, the rare single edit of “Smile” was finally made available on the deluxe UK edition of a very comprehensive collection entitled “King Of Pop.” “Smile” is a true work of art created by the late superstar with Foster’s fundamental help. The delicate and tender arrangement with orchestra, piano and minimal keyboards beautifully backs-up Jacko’s unforgettable voice. Together, the two music geniuses did create an absolutely moving masterpiece.

Lyrics

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You’ll get by…
If you smile
With your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile if you’ll just…
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just…
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You’ll get by…
If you smile
Through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just Smile…
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just Smile
