AMNESIA

From THE COMPLETION BACKWARD PRINCIPLE
Written by Tubes & David Foster

“The Completion Backward Principle”, in 1981, was the first Tubes’ album that David Foster produced. The Tubes already had a good cult following especially based on their live performances but were also trying to broaden up their popularity and the meeting with Foster was perfectly on target.

This record is especially interesting cause it matches the band’s very personal, dark lyrics and new wave/rock sounds with Foster’s sophisticated production. There are a few songs that are very “L.A.” sounding, like the ballad, “I Don’t Wanna Wait Anymore” that could have been easily found on Bill Champlin’s “Runaway” album, or the song we have picked as our song of the week, “Amnesia”, an uptempo rock ballad that is heavily influenced by Toto with strong vocals (Champlin guests on it) and keyboards and guitars sound, it also gives an example of Fee Waybill’s excellent singing (one of the best rock’n’roll voices) and the tight musicianship of his band. Other very good song on the record are the rock/dance “Let’s Make Some Noise” and the rocker “Talk To Ya Later” (both co-written with Foster).

Foster and Waybill have also worked together for the singer’s solo cd, “Read My Lips”, released in 1984, another solid effort with some very good pop/rock numbers that unfortunately remained a well kept secret for the lack of support by the record company.

Lyrics

It seems we stood and talked
Like this before
Why can’t I remember
Did we share something more

I must have loved you
Once upon a time
Amnesia has come
And clouded my mind

Was there a fire burning
Or were there tears
Did I ever whisper
Words of love in your ear

I can’t go on
Not knowing my own name
I only have
This curse of love to blame

What have I done to deserve this
Can’t find my love if I can’t find myself
I’m imprisoned by amnesia
And I can’t break the spell

The love of days gone past
Is haunting me
Your face looks so familiar
Who can you be

This is the price
That I have to pay
That’s why I cry
Cry out for yesterday

What have I done to deserve this
Can’t find my love if I can’t find myself
I’m imprisoned by amnesia
And I can’t break the spell

It seems we stood and talked
Like this before
Why can’t I remember
Did we share something more

I must have loved you
Once upon a time
Amnesia has come
And clouded my mind

What have I done to deserve this
Can’t find my love if I can’t find myself
I’m imprisoned by amnesia
And I can’t break the spell
