From CAN’T SLOW DOWN

When David Foster and Lionel Richie both won the “Producer Of The Year” award, tied, at the 1985 Grammys, sure they were no strangers to each other. Foster co-produced one track, “The Only One”, on Richie’s mega seller, “Can’t Slow Down” while Richie co-wrote, with Foster and Bill Champlin, one song, “Please Hold On” (check that review in the archives) off the chart topper “Chicago 17”. Both these gentlemen are true kings of ballads, having written some of the all time best love songs and their collaboration is a winner.
“The Only One” is a typical Foster melody, with all its trademarks like the mini moog bass part and it sounds a lot like a Chicago/Foster collaboration. Listen to Lionel’s sweet vocals (helped by Richard Marx on the chorus) and Foster’s brief but effective piano solo, while the song ending reminds us of another “Foz” goody like “Hold Me ‘Til The Mornin’ Comes”. The “Can’t Slow Down” cd is filled with hits, famous songs like “All Night Long”, “Hello” and “Penny Lover” but our personal favorite is the r&b ballad “Love Will Find A Way”, a true masterpiece of class. This record is without any doubt the pinnacle of Lionel Richie’s career but he has kept (and still is) giving us great music and has collaborated with Foster in another couple of records, always with very good results, like the song “I Hear Your Voice” off his 1998 “Time” cd. On a final note, you can now buy a newly released, remastered version of this album with bonus tracks, it is especially interesting for Foster fans cause it has a demo version of “The Only One” but especially for the demo song “Tell Me” which is nothing else than Chicago’s “Please Hold On” with slightly different lyrics.
