MY EVERLASTING LOVE

From RAY KENNEDY
Written by David Foster and Ray Kennedy

One of the most loved songs on Bill Champlin’s classic Runaway album is a soft, gorgeous ballad entitled “Tonight Tonight”. That beautiful song is a great reworking of “My Everlasting Love” from Ray Kennedy’s album from 1980. This whole record is influenced by the sounds of Boz Scaggs that were very successful around those years (take a look at its “Scaggish” cover too) and it is obviously filled with classy pop/rock songs with some very good ballads.

“My Everlasting Love” is so typically “Foster” from start to finish. Listen to the intro, the piano, rhodes and synths, it couldn’t be anybody else but Da Man. Ray Kennedy has a powerful voice but on this number he shows some sweetness too. Check out also Steve Lukather’s work on guitars, especially the effective solo at the end. There are other interesting tracks on “Ray Kennedy”, like the other Foster number entitled “You Oughta Know By Now”, a change of mood with its uptempo energy. Other good moments are another sweet ballad, “Just For The Moment” that was the only Billboard chart entry at # 82 and the rock opener “It Never Crossed My Mind”.

Lyrics

Love came my way again
how could I resist
After just one kiss
Just like a mirror
I looked back once more
So why do I go on pretending
That this love was never ending

Now that you’ve left me
How can I forget
My everlasting love
Caught in a world of only make believe
So why do I go on pretending
That this love is never ending

Tonight, tonight
I held you in my arms so tightly
Well, is it right
For me to feel this way
(about you tonight)
Tonight, tonight
I held you in my arms with loving
Well, is it right
For me to feel this way
About you every day

And now that it’s over
I should have told
My everlasting love
I’m caught in a world of only make believe
So why do I go on pretending
Desperately I see the ending

(Tonight)
Tonight, tonight
I held you in my arms so tightly
Well, is it right
That I should feel this way
For me to feel this way
(about you tonight, tonight)
Tonight, tonight
I held you in my arms so tightly
Well, is it right
That I should feel this way
About you every day
Tonight, tonight
I held you in my arms with loving
Well, is it right
For me to feel this way
About you every day

You are my love
My everlasting love
My everlasting love
