From WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING
Written by Deniece Williams, Carole Bayer Sager & David Foster

This ballad brings us back once again to David Foster’s finest r&b work. In 1979 he was probably asked by Maurice White to produce the majority of Deniece Williams’ new album (3 cuts were produced by former Raydio leader Ray Parker jr.) and, as usual, the results were outstanding. Williams was a former Wonderlove (Stevie Wonder’s backing singers) that became an EW&F protégée in the second half of the seventies. She was/is an outstanding singer with a wonderful voice that reached the top of the charts with hit singles like “Free” and her duet with Johnny Mathis “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. “When Love Comes Calling” is filled with great songs, there are a couple of hits too, like the #1 Billboard’s Top Disco “I’ve Got The Next Dance” and the r&b uptempo “I Found Love”.

The record’s true gems are tracks like “Are You Thinking?”, the wonderful, pop/jazzy title track, always cowritten by David Foster, and a trio of incredible ballads like “Touch Me Again” (Williams’ voice with Foster’s piano and Jeremy Lubbock’s string arrangement), “God Knows”, and the incredible “Why Can’t We Fall In Love”. This masterpiece has it all, wonderful vocals (backing vocals courtesy of Maurice White & Bill Champlin), the sweetest melody and the most amazing strings & horns arrangements (Foster with Jerry Hey). This tune is without any doubt up there together with songs like “After The Love Is Gone”, “Through The Fire”, “Love, Look What You’ve Done To Me” as one of Foster’s best ballads ever.

Lyrics

Here we are together, you and I
Feeling like I always knew we could
Seems as though my heart just touched the sky
Never knew that we could feel this good

The joy of you and me
I’m hoping you will see
Just reach out to me

Why can’t we fall in love?
Why don’t we fall in love?
In a world that’s rushing by
And where love is seldom true
I know that I can find some strength inside of you
Can’t you feel it too?
Don’t be afraid to let your love come through

Few of us will ever see the moon
Or even stop to hear our own love song
Before you know it’s over all too soon
I hope that’s not the way we move along

Playing foolish games
When no one wins the prize
It’s right here in our eyes

Why can’t we fall in love?
Why don’t we fall in love?
In a world that’s rushing by
And where love is seldom true
I know that I can find some strength inside of you
Can’t you feel it too?
Don’t be afraid to let your love come through
